Election Inspector Duties

 Election Inspectors play a vital role at our polls.  They work directly with voters and assist them in any of the following capacities:

  • Working the poll books to check-in registered voters
  • Handing out ballots and assisting with ExpressVote and tabulator equipment
  • Processing absentee ballots

Election Inspectors must be a resident of Iowa County.

 Election Chiefs manage the voting site and ensure all operating procedures are followed.  Chiefs are also responsible for completing Election Day documentation, reconciling voter numbers and ballots, and resolving voter concerns.  A minimum of 6 hours of training is required per each 2 year appointment.

Chief Inspectors must be a resident of the Town of Highland.

Polling locations are open statewide from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Poll workers can chose to work a full day, generally from 6:30 a.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m. (or close.  Alternatively, a worker can chose to work a split shift.  These hours are generally 6:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to Close.

Poll workers are compensated for working at polling places at a rate determined by the Town Board.  They are also compensated for attending any required training.  Some individuals may choose to volunteer their time as well.

Training Requirements

Municipal clerks are required by state law to provide training. This training provides all of the necessary information and knowledge to be a successful poll worker. Chief inspectors must receive six hours of continuing election education training during each two-year period.

Training Requirements

High School students that are a resident of the Town, at least 16, and have a min 3.0 GPA may work the polls.  Written authorization is required by both the school and the student's legal guardians.  Hours may be paid or counted towards volunteer requirements.
